3.5 Stars. Two years ago, Julia's life changed forever. Her husband drowned trying to save their daughters life (they believed their daughter fell in the river when they weren't looking). Now Julia has converted their home into a writer's retreat. She buried her husband two years ago, but her daughter's body was never found. She clings to the belief that her daughter is still alive as her body was never found.Lucas is one of her first guests at t...

A heart pounding, atmospheric, rip roaring good mystery!Mark Edwards is so thorough and detailed with his plotting - his stories are intricately detailed and they are always tightly wound with no stone left unturned. Full of spooky folklore and legends and scary ghost stories, this one definitely had me jumping at the slightest sounds and turning on all the lights in the house. I had no idea how this story was going to unfold, and I’m happy to ...

3.5 starsThe Retreat is a dark, creepy, and atmospheric read fueled by childhood fears based on mythical creatures, ghosts, and haunted houses. Mark Edwards draws inspiration from such childhood myths as Bloody Mary and the boogeyman to create a sense of fear in a small town in Wales. Horror writer Lucas Radcliffe returns to his childhood hometown Beddmarr, Wales to spend some time at a writer’s retreat to hopefully help get his next novel on ...

2.5I’m the outlier here, but I have concluded that this was just not a book for me.I have mixed feelings about this one. I was intrigued by the mystery of what happened to a missing girl near a river. I was hoping for a good psychological thriller, but it felt more “supernatural” to me.There were some spooky happenings that kept me reading and finishing the book, but can’t say I’m a huge fan. I did struggle to finish it.Please check out...

I really enjoy Mark Edwards books and was delighted to receive a copy of The Retreat. This thriller was full of myths and scary tales told to the local children about a witch they called The Widow. Lucas is a writer that is having problems finishing his latest book. He goes to a writers retreat in Wales to get some peace and quiet to work. Julia who runs the retreat is a widow who's husband drowned trying to save their young daughter but the body...

First and foremost, a large thank you to NetGalley, Mark Edwards, Amazon Publishing, and Thomas & Mercer for providing me with a copy of this publication, which allows me to provide you with an unbiased review. In his latest thriller, Mark Edwards adds a degree of the paranormal while also creating a mystery that will keep the reader guessing. Lucas Radcliffe is still riding the wave of his latest bestseller, exploring a number of missing children...

Haunting!!! Don’t read this book alone at night unless you keep the lights on!!! 4.5 StarsSee my reviews here: is my first book by Mark Edwards and I absolutely loved it! I wasn’t sure what the genre would be at first, because it has such a tone of the supernatural about it. I think it is best for readers to just let it unfold. I didn’t know which genre it would be, and I liked it all the better ...

I am a big fan of Mark Edwards work and jumped at the chance to read his latest novel 'The Retreat'. Lucas is a horror novelist and when facing writers block decides to stop at a writers retreat. The Retreat was set up two years ago by Julia who lost her family in a tragic accident. Her husband drowned trying to save their daughter, Lily, in the river near their rural home. But the little girl’s body was never found and Julia believes Lily is s...

"It was time to go back into the dark." Truer words have never been spoken! That's how I felt going into this book. When I can finish a novel within 24 hours, you know it's a winner! I blew threw this one everyone! Let me tell you... this one is so full of twists it's like you're on a roller coaster in complete darkness and you don't know which way you're headed. Mark Edwards delivers yet another gripping and chilling novel. Lucas Radcliffe, a be...

*4.5 stars Only my second book by Mark Edwards and I can safely say that he' s quickly becoming a favorite. I struggled to put this book down. It was highly engrossing! This was part mystery, part gothic, and based on urban legends. You know? Like those myths you hear about when your a kid: bloody mary, the boogeyman, etc. This one has the Red Widow. It seems that everyone in this small English town is very superstitious about the Red Widow. When...

This is not the first I've read of Mark Edwards' books ... but it is the best! Reminds me a bit of a horror story within a horror story .. although this isn't really a horror story at all.Lucas, a horror novelist, has checked into a remote writer's retreat. When his girlfriend was killed, he lost his ability to write. Maybe what he needs is a long quiet, relaxed stay without the sight and sounds of a busy city. Too bad that's not what he gets.Jul...

Because I'm a huge fan of A) Creepy stories B) Urban Legends and C) Mark Edwards novels, The Retreat was a hit with me that's for sure. Although I'm not heading into any woods for the rest of my life. Lucas is a horror writer (actually I'd quite like to read the book he wrote that was a bestseller) who heads off to a writing retreat in rural Wales, hoping to finish his difficult next book. What he finds is a widow with a missing presumed drowned ...

“It’s like I dived into that river two years ago. And I’m still under the water, holding my breath.” Take a spooky old house in a small, isolated Welsh community, connected to the disappearance of a small girl. Add a group of writers with overactive imaginations and a sprinkling of things that go bump in the night. Stir in someone who is prepared to do anything for the past to stay hidden and pour the whole mixture into a remote, eerie fo...

1970-01-01 you to Netgalley and the publisher for providing a free ebook copy of The Retreat By: Mark Edwards in exchange for an honest review. Do you like slow burn and atmospheric mystery/thrillers? Than The Retreat is for you! This may not be the fastest paced book, but it's very intriguing and well written. I liked the MC, Lucas, and how he wanted to help Julia find or find out what happened to her missing c...

Well, this is one writers' retreat where I never want to go....LOL.The Retreat is a creepy suspense novel with multiple twists and turns making it quite enjoyable for this reader. Julia has opened her home, Nyth Bran as a writers' retreat. Two years ago, her husband drowned and her little girl Lily disappeared. It happened when they were taking a hike as a family. Lily was walking ahead of them. After a few minutes, when neither parent could find...

Thanks to author #MarkEdwards , publisher #Thomas&Mercer , and #NetGalley for my digital copy of #TheRetreat. I can honestly say that it is my favorite book of 2018 so far. This was the third novel I have read by Mark Edwards, and by far my favorite. It genuinely sparked that feeling I had as a teenager when I first developed my love of thrillers. This one was a perfect blend of a "scary" campfire story and the reality that first gets these storie...

I want to start off by saying I usually love Mark Edwards books and get very excited when a new one comes out. however, this one seemed more of a supernatural one rather than the psychological thrillers that he usually writes that have me gripped from page 1 but I just found this one very hard to get into, I have given it 3 stars because he is such a good writer just the story was not for me so not the usual 5* review I would give.

I was excited about this book and i’m happy to say i wasn’t disappointed at all. The characters were well developed (Lucas was a bit vanilla but i guess that’s why he gets along with Miss bossypants Julia). One particular part of the book near the end felt like watching an episode of Scooby Doo for adults and I mean that as a compliment. On the more serious note, the story is captivating and chilling at times, Julia is a character you can...

We all have fears - often fears that we have clung tightly to from our childhood; some of the fears being mere urban legends told to scare and warn, others built on fact. The Retreat is a lurid, sickly addicting tale - that gets into your spine and spreads a chill throughout your body; leaving you gasping for breath, drowning in words, as your pulled into the pages of the book. The Retreat, is a tale of Lucy, a child who goes missing - thought to...

I’ve always been impressed with Mark Edwards’ work, after each book I’m left in awe at the story telling, the characters, the incredible settings and the suspense and mystery. This book has to be one of my absolute favourites. For a book with almost 400 words, I read it quite quickly because this one, as with all of this Authors’ books, was extremely hard to put down. I’m telling you, you’ll get completely sucked into this story, a st...

3.5 stars. The Retreat is a creepy, atmospheric thriller, that takes place on an old house in a Welsh town, where something is very definitely not right. Not my favorite Mark Edwards novel, but it was a solid thriller and I'd recommend it if you are in the mood for something creepy with a hint of the supernatural. And that ending! It totally shocked me--had no idea where things were going! *I received a free pre-release copy of this ebook from Ne...

''The Retreat'' is the latest thriller novel by Mark Edwards and the story is about an author of horror stories who decide to lodge in a writers' retreat accommodation in Northern Wales, a kind of getaway for writers who want to devote themselves to their work without much distraction. The protagonist, Lucas, who is haunted by the painful memoirs of his deceased girlfriend will find himself involved in a weird and creepy plot which centers around...

A great slow-burning thriller with twists and turns that you'll never see coming! Julia is a bereft woman who has lost everything of value to her: her husband who tragically drowned in the river and her daughter Lily who disappeared on the same day. The police closed the case long ago despite never having found Lily's body. Everyone in town assumes that she is dead and drowned in the river alongside her father, but that Julia refuses to believe i...

Finished this book at midnight having found myself unable to put it down despite my drooping eyes and tiredness. I simply had to unravel all the secrets surrounding the disappearance of 8 year old Lily and the possible link with the old folklore tale of the Red Widow, who as legend would have it, returns to a quiet Welsh village every 35 years to seek a child to steal. The folklore surrounding this story gives it a real spooky and claustrophobic ...
