Awakened by James S. Murray

Awakened

The star of truTV’s hit show Impractical Jokers—alongside veteran sci-fi and horror writer Darren Wearmouth—delivers a chilling and wickedly fun supernatural novel in the vein of The Strain, in which a beautiful new subway line in New York City unearths an ancient dark horror that threatens the city’s utter destruction and the balance of civilization itself. After years of waiting, New York's newest subway line is finally ready, an express...

Thanks to the publisher for reaching out to me to offer a physical ARC in exchange for an honest review.I am shocked at how much I enjoyed this book! It was fast-paced. It was intense. It was chock full of action. It had at least moderately developed characters with some depth to them. The villains were both human... and mysterious other. (Can't say more, spoilers!)The writers have created a really interesting world just like ours with a little t...

3.5 of 5 stars at The BiblioSanctum https://bibliosanctum.com/2018/06/26/...Written by James S. Murray of Impractical Jokers fame with sci-fi author Darren Wearmouth, Awakened really couldn’t have come at a better time. Summer is here, and this impossibly fun and deliciously creepy horror-thriller would make for the perfect read by the beach, pool, or anywhere really—as long as it’s bright, sunny, above ground, and surrounded by people. Tru...

I received this book through Goodreads First Reads.I was pleasantly surprised with this one. I honestly went into it not expecting to enjoy it as much as I did. Winning a book, that sounds interesting, can always be hit or miss but this one definitely hit the mark in terms of an interesting plot. Was it perfect? No, some of the dialogue seemed to get a bit repetitive and explaining some of the situations, that happened along the way, seemed to de...

Thanks to Harper Voyager for the review copy.Let’s get this out of the way: I have a few biases when it comes to my reading. I am not a fan of collaboration novels. I have never read a novel that was written by two (or more) authors that I enjoyed. I also don’t like über basic thrillers.Awakened is both — with one of the “authors” being a television star.I went into this with an open mind, though. The book deserved that. I was sent thi...

I don't always love sci fi reads for some reason but every now and then I come across I just can't say no to. Chalk it up to curiosity or a great synopsis, either way I feel like I need to read them. Awakened was truly a different kind of read. Part dystopian, part sci fi and part thriller, it kept me interested and turning the pages more often than not. With a conspiracy theory twist I didn't see coming, this truly stood out compared to others I...

When I was offered this ARC by the publisher, I read the synopsis and thought heck yeah I’ll read it!..... and I wasn’t disappointed. A new subway line is being christened in New York City with all the fanfare and hoopla which included not only the city’s mayor, but the President of the United States as well. The opening of the celebration was to have the first train come in with a load of it’s first passengers, but when it rolls into the...

This book was sent to me by Haper Voyager in exchange for an honest review. This book was entertaining, but sort of in the same way action movies with not a lot of substance are entertaining. Even though the marketing for this book says it's horror, I felt like it was more of a political thriller than a horror novel. Sure, there was gore and evil subterranean creatures, but I like my horror to be darker and a lot less political. Some of the charact...

As always this review can also be found on my blog The Tattooed Book Geek: https://thetattooedbookgeek.wordpress...I received a free copy of this book courtesy of the publisher in exchange for an honest review.Awakened came to my attention and piqued my interest after I saw that it was written by James S. Murray, better known to many as ‘Murr‘ from the Impractical Jokers TV show. I’m a big fan of the Impractical Jokers series, it’s good h...

2.5⭐"The power cut. Total darkness. Glass shattering. So many screams. So many..." Holy fucking opening. It is described on the back of the book, but I still absolutely loved the subway leaving on its first journey & coming back empty & covered in blood. AMAZING & SO CREEPY. Obviously I was hooked on the beginning of the book. The short chapters keep everything moving along quickly, and I was dying to know what happened. In opposition to the ea...

Awakened, written by James S. Murray and Darren Wearmouth, is a story that involves a big fear of mine: underground subways. It may be the claustrophobia talking, but there is something I just can’t handle when it comes to dark tunnels full of nothingness, bugs, and more that could just come collapsing down at any moment. I mean what if the train stalled and there’s nothing around?! I am not getting out and walking in that… bye. I’ve seen...

Awakened is a fast-paced exciting thriller along the lines of James Patterson or Dan Brown. The characters are well crafted which to me is one of the keys to a successful thriller as the more vested my interest in the people, the better the thriller grips me and keeps me turning pages to find out what happens next. From about the midpoint of the novel on, I was pretty sure that the novel was laid out to be the first in a series and while I was co...

Very entertaining, frightening and gory look at what lurks below the subway tunnels of New York City. I love monster horror and this did the trick. Review to follow shortly on For Winter Nights.

I absolutely love getting ARC from publishers. And I really, truly hate when I have to give them a 1 star review (because I have had publishers stop sending me stuff, even though they claim that they want honest reviews). But, alas integrity is important to me.In all fairness, the concept of the book itself is more that of an action movie and so even if it was well executed would probably only rate at 3 stars simply because it is not my cup of te...

I received this ARC in the mail last weekend. I'm not a huge horror fan, but figured what the heck, and went into it with low expectations. Thankfully it was a weekend, as I had difficulty putting the book down and read well into the night. Many scenes are quite intense, and right when you think you have figured it all out another twist is thrown in. People are not who they appear to be. I really did feel on the edge of my seat often.I'm rating t...

What was once underground is now coming to the surface. - Gavin BryarsI wanted to like this horror book more than I did. I grew up watching "Creature Features" and loving monster books and movies. This book, written by a writing team, lacked a spark for me. Parts of it were good but more parts were repetitive and lacking depth. There's a brand new subway opening in New York City, connecting parts of the city with New Jersey. There is also an underw...

Full disclosure: I was sent a free advance copy of this in exchange for reviewing it here (even fuller disclosure: part of my soul was all "THEY'RE SENDING ME FREE BOOKS NOW! I'VE MADE IT BIG"). I think, though, that the only way this is going to influence my review is by making me go into a bit more detail than I would have otherwise. This book is okay. I'm going to get the caveat out of the way ahead of time: I don't read a lot of modern horror,...

Wow! This book arrived at a good time as I was confined to a sick bed. I thought I'd just read a chapter or two but I could not put it down once I started! It moved along quite quickly with good character development and scenes described so well I could picture them in my mind.If you are a fan of Stephen King or Dean Koontz you will like this book. I hope James S Murray continues to write such engaging novels and I will be looking up Darren Wearm...

I received this book for free from the Author in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review. The nitty-gritty: A bloody good time, Awakened has plenty of twists and will appeal to fans of survivalist horror.I featured Awakened on a Waiting on Wednesday post some months back, and author Darren Wearmouth actually contacted me to see if I’d like a review copy. And I’m so glad I had the...

So Intense!!! This was an extremely hard to put down, non stop thriller/horror, with something new to cause nightmares! Fans of James Rollins, Jeremy Robinson, Warren Fahy, and Douglas Preston & Lincoln Child will love this book. I highly recommend this title.

First off, I would like to start by saying that this is my first book review. I was lucky enough to receive and ARC from author James Murray at Bookcon, and wanted to honor his request at a review as well as start a long time wish of mine to start making online book reviews. That being said, I would like to say that as a long time reader I’ve felt that you can learn about the author through the books that they write. Though the character persona...

I first found out about this book because I’m a huge fan of Impractical Jokers and saw that one of the guys on the show, Murr (or James Murray), was writing a horror novel and was going to be at BookCon. He did a panel at BookCon about his book and one of the things he said about his new book is that he is trying to get it made into a TV show and after reading it, I can see why. This is an action packed book and most chapters are very short and...

I originally wanted to read this book because I am a huge fan of James Murray and his TV show, Impractical Jokers, so I was curious to see him as an author. I was pleasantly surprised with how good this book was. It was gory and descriptive and unique and twisty. However, I did only give three stars because the book/genre as a whole are just not my taste. Also, warning, probably not the best book to read while pregnant. Received this book in exch...

I had passing interest in this because it sounded like it might read like a cheesy horror film. There is nothing BAD about this per se, but nothing about it is terribly surprising or unique. The story develops very predictably, the characters seem generally pretty stock - you've probably seen this story before. It's entertaining enough, but probably pretty forgettable. Thanks to the publisher for an advance reader's copy.

Yikes. More sci-fi thriller than horror novel, this book is a whole mess of cliches and one-dimensional characters and flat dialogue. The great concept earns it an extra star from me, but the book doesn’t even remotely deliver.

I was given this ARC from the publisher, who asked for a review on GoodReads.Unfortunately, they'll probably regret this decision. This book is lousy.Advice given to all writers is "show, don't tell." This book is all show. I couldn't get past page 70 (out of 280) and the only reason I slogged on that far was out of a sense of duty. The plot is silly, the dialogue is ridiculous, and the characters aren't even sketches of characters, just doodles. ...

"This wasn't terrorism. It was pure terror." 3.5/5 starsThis book is the perfect palate cleanser for readers reeling from book hangovers. If you've just read an emotionally taxing story, if you're in need of something that will deliver pure thrilling escapism for a few hours, Awakened is a great choice. A conventional blend of monster horror and shadow government thriller, this book delivers unobjectionable cheesy action punctuated by the occasio...
